Business Management

To what extent does packaging for goods contribute to the destruction of the environment?

Packaging must keep the product safe during shipment between the manufacturing facility and the retailer and must prevent damage while the product sits on the shelf. Therefore, product packaging must be sturdy and reliable. Each form of packaging uses a lot of resources like energy, water, chemicals, petroleum, minerals, wood and fibres to produce. Its manufacture often generates air emissions including greenhouse gases, heavy metals and particulates. Excessive use of packaging materials is creating many environmental problems. Large amounts of packaging material waste raises the requirement of effective waste-management systems. In addition, many packaging materials, e.g., polyethylene, are not suitable for disposal in the environment. Amazon alone generated an estimated 465 million pounds of plastic packaging in 2019. If all of that trash took the form of inflatable air pillows, it would create a plastic trail long enough to go around the world 500 times.

Should/Could businesses be more responsible?

All businesses should shift to sustainable packaging, that's the least they could do as customers expect the businesses to take care of the environment. Yes some businesses can't change their packaging method due to safety reasons but they could have a team of researchers to find a substitute which is more sustainable. Businesses which pollute the lake should be held responsible as there are other ways to dispose waste which is time consuming but worth it.

Why might they not want to be more responsible?

It often comes down to one thing: money. Packaging items in plastic, including for e-commerce shipping, is often the cheapest option for brands. The push for plastic isn’t empathetic. It shows how disconnected companies truly are from the desires of their customers and the demands of the planet. Not to mention that it puts customers in a bad mood when they have to sort through plastic packaging, no matter how hard they’ve tried to find eco-friendly alternatives. Finding plastic-free alternatives often feels like it requires a full-time job because it is so difficult and time-consuming. Although many innovative, eco-friendly companies have grown in popularity in recent years, most mainstream retailers across all industries are still holding strong on plastic. But that doesn’t match consumer trends. Of global consumers, 72% are actively buying more environmentally friendly products than they did five years ago, and 81% expect to buy even more over the next five years.
